Build the Future Education Collaborative provides support services to schools that work with integrity to enable predominately disadvantaged students to further their achievement and joy in school, society, and life. At this time, Build the Future does this by acting as a not-for-profit charter support organization for the Freire Charter Schools, which consist of three campuses in Philadelphia, PA and one in Wilmington, DE.

The Freire network of charter schools was founded in 1999 with the opening of Freire Charter School in Philadelphia. With the opening of our campus in Wilmington in 2015, it became necessary to form a separate legal entity to provide support services to all Freire schools, which was named Build the Future. As a charter support organization, we assist schools in areas including leadership recruitment and development, governance, facilities management, strategic planning, accounting and financial management, legal compliance, information technology services, fundraising, and marketing.

Our team works creatively to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and we are willing to do things differently to get them done well. We believe that relationships matter and we respect diversity and individuality so that everyone feels included on the team. Working with us provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about charter schools and to gain exposure to the workings of both the education and nonprofit fields.

Responsibilities

Build the Future is a small and dynamic organization that is committed to remaining flexible and therefore ready to grow or adapt to a changing education landscape at any time. Responsibilities are shared across the team, and duties shift between staff and change altogether over time. Working on grant applications and other substantial writing projects will be a core feature of this position, while other responsibilities may be more flexible. This position will report to the Director of Operations.

Areas where the Grant Coordinator may be involved include:

Understand what Freire schools do and how they operate in order to clearly and confidently communicate the success of these schools
Develop a general understanding of federal, state, and local laws and guidance applicable to K-12 charter schools, sufficient to convey the success of our program in meeting such requirements
Research funding opportunities that align with our schools’ activities
Work with Build the Future’s finance team and school leaders to determine areas of financial need
Develop ongoing, positive relationships with foundation officers
Research all details of application and funding requirements
Develop an effective system to maintain detailed and accurate records of research on foundation background and priorities, as well as our communication history, applications, and funding outcomes
Work with the team to make strategic decisions about specific funding sources to apply to and develop semiannual work plans
Write and compile complete grant applications after collecting information from Build the Future’s finance team and school leaders
Compile information from numerous members of the Build the Future team and school leaders and employees in order to write reports
With support from the team, write reports describing the school’s activities for public and private funders
Conduct all grant-related work in close coordination with all members of the Build the Future team who work on other areas of fundraising
Work in our donor database
Assist with drafting fundraising communications such as solicitation letters
Maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Support Build the Future and the Freire network of schools in thinking strategically and upholding our standard of excellence at all times
Contribute to meeting any other needs that Build the Future or our schools may have, with ad-hoc duties or special projects that may relate to operations, planning, or office administration

Qualifications

This is a writing-intensive position, so applicants must have exceptional writing skills. In addition, Build the Future does not have a development director and instead shares fundraising responsibilities across our team. Therefore, the ability to work in close coordination with a team is absolutely essential.

Qualifications for the Grants and Reporting Coordinator position include:

A bachelor’s degree
Preferably, two years of experience with a fundraising or writing component
Excellent written and oral communication skills with a variety of critical stakeholders
Attention to detail and exceptional organization skills
Ability to successfully deliver on self-directed work while managing multiple priorities
Superior time management and ability to plan to comfortably meet deadlines
Passion for urban youth and a no-excuses approach to how to serve them
Belief in and support for the mission of Build the Future and all Freire schools
Interest in education as well as growing as a professional
Commitment to collaboration and collegiality
Ability to contribute positively to a growing organization

Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary for this position will be negotiable depending on experience and qualifications. Build the Future provides medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage and offers employees the option to pay in to other types of insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan, and tax-free transit. Paid time off is currently aligned with school holidays and breaks during the school year plus two weeks off during the summer.
